ABOUT
Who’s this guy?
Hey! I’m Carlos Conceicao, Digital Compositor at Scanline VFX, living in the beautiful city of Vancouver – British Columbia, and I’ve been working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Independence Day: Ressurgence and most recently Justice League.
Graduated as a Computer Engineer at FCT-UNL in Portugal, I soon realized programming was not my cup of tea and decided to explore the Computer Graphics
In the past I worked for 4 years in Arqui300, a CG production company for Architectural Visualization based in Portugal. My background as a CG Artist brought me a strong eye for detail and technical precision and I developed a strong set of communication skills that gave me the opportunity to work as an instructor in a VFX Academy and University in Portugal, where I taught a Master Class in 3D Film Production and several 3Ds Max and Vray courses for beginners and advanced students.
With experience came the need to feel complete as an artist so I choose to learn 2D Compositing as the next step on my career. Moved to London UK and took the Compositing for VFX Professional course at Escape Studios (18 weeks) where I proudly ended up doing the storyboard, production and directing my own visual effects academic showreel, which opened the doors of the Industry for me.
After Escape Studios I went to The Foundry, where I’ve worked with the Mari team, helping developing future versions, creating real world exercises to test Mari’s performance as a 2D and 3D painting tool. The first actual comp job came from ETC (Electric Theatre Collective), a new company based in London where I did a bit of everything, from keying to roto and some clean up for advertising and music videos.
The invitation from Double Negative came next where I stayed for 4 years, doing the whole journey from Roto to Paint to Comp, being a pro active artist, involved in different projects and responsibilities like supervision, training, recruitment, bidding, interviews and the development of in house tools as my passion is always to share the knowledge as the way to grow personally within a strong and balanced team. Been invited several times to lead or supervise a team, working closely with the production team, and following my old passion as a trainer, I ended up being involved in many activities like developing training videos, traveling to Singapore to train the team and ultimately overseeing the whole roto and prep department as a Site Wide Supervisor.
A huge highlight of my working life happened when I organized a Mini-Z Radiocontrol Car race, one of my hobbies, in the main atrium for a fund raising event!
In order to keep growing and challenging myself, I’ve decided to get out of my comfort zone and move to the Jedi Council, the legendary Industrial Light & Magic London, and fulfill an old dream of working in Star Wars (you might have noticed I’m quite a fan… just a tiny bit…) as an established Compositor. I’ve worked in some epic shows including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 007: Specter, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and The Martian, alongside the most incredible team of Compositors, Leads and Supervisors that I’ve ever dreamed of. Been also involved in the redesign of the roto and paint pipeline and many weekly training events to help the young team to develop their skills and mentoring the runners in their initial steps.

The move to Vancouver and to join Scanline VFX was another personal choice, the search for an healthier life where me and my Family can enjoy not only to work, but to be close to Nature, do Sports and discover the joys of the Beautiful British Columbia. Life is driven by Crazy Dreams and Tough Reality, you just need to learn how to balance this two poles and you’ll find the sweet spot of working in the Visual Effects for the Film Industry.
I’m now launching this startup with my beautiful wife Olga Ribeiro, and share with the world what is now a signature training for the career of Digital Compositor for the Visual Effects production in the Film Industry. You will find spread around the world many artists that I had the pleasure to share a classroom with, and the success speaks for itself. It’s never a product of a sole teacher but the result of the chemistry developed in class because a teacher is only as good as their students, and I can proudly tell that my students are the best.

Why choose RTC?
“My passion for training has been growing for more than 10 years, son of a Science and Math teacher, I’ve done countless tutorials, live sessions, lectures and mentoring talks, either in Company or School environment. People can always count with an honest, inspiring and goofy word from someone that does not pretend to be the best or know everything, but that has the strongest motivation for sharing knowledge and industry experience with the young generation of artists.”

Say what?

“I count myself one of the lucky ones who has been able to experience Carlos’ training first hand. Not only was the work we did the most in depth and informative training I have ever had, it was also by far the most enjoyable. Carlos’ passion for the craft is infectious, his dedication to teach and share his wealth of knowledge is inspirational, and I fully credit him for getting me to where I am in my career. I would encourage artists of all levels to sign up whilst you still can, Carlos has truly raised the bar when it comes to digital compositing, RTC will be an industry game changer.”

“Carlos is one of the best teachers in the business. He has a knack for explaining complex VFX concepts and showing you straightforward ways of applying them in your work. After his training I quickly went from being a junior roto artist to a compositor in tv and feature films. Thanks, Carlos!”

“Carlos is without doubt the best mentor I have ever had. Not just because his amazing creative skills and ability but because he is the most passionate person when it comes to the training of the next generation of young artists. I will forever be grateful for the training and guidance Carlos gave to me which still continues today”

“Carlos not only teaches you the how, he also helps you understand the why, in such a clear manner that even complicated principles just click and make sense. He has such an infectious passion and extensive knowledge of VFX that it is an absolute joy to learn from him.
